My Reflections on ICT for Reading

I was looking forward to doing the ICT course because we are in the age of technology and it is important that teachers keep up with the "techno savvy" students. However, I remain with bitter sweet memories. I never imagined that the course would have been so intense and compact. Every week we were being taught a different form of technology which needed to be understood and practised. At times I felt so overwhelmed by all that UWI expected of me, the learner. Nevertheless, "giving up" is not a part of my vocabulary, and as Whitney Houston sang: " I was not built to break". We have come to the end of the course and the learning experience has been tremendous. Undoubtedly, I have acquired knowledge and skills to enhance teaching and learning because of the hardwork, dedication and competence of my tutors. Finally I wish to thank God and all those who have assisted me with this course. Many thanks and God bless!

  1. Hi Janice, I do agree with you. Like you I looked forward to learning the new technologies in the Web 2.0. I had no idea what it was about as I had been a pre- historic computer creature. I knew very little in terms of prior knowledge. However I attended all except one of my classes, and missed that one because I could not have avoided it.

As the weeks went by I kept a positive attitude and used Bandura's self-eficacy theory. It actually worked and I built gradually on what I knew. The course was a rigorous one and I did not expect anything less. After allthere must be some level of validity and legitimacy to the programme.

I am going back to school with something I can work with. I will start with those i am very comfortable with and continue to explore the others and add them gradually. I know that I also have the support of yourself and other colleagues whom I can call on. We also have our excellent tutors whom we can contact if the need arises.

I think we should form an association so that we can keep our group together and further the cause of reading and the development of our students' literacies.

    All the best!

  2. I think all of us shared that sentiment about the course. I honestly didn't expect the ICT course to be so demanding. The experience gain was tremendous but we need to transfer this knowledge to make our class more interesting and exciting using technology. "If you don't use it, you lose it"

  3. I agree with the idea of forming an association as a support base for each other. I have learnt so much from this course. My only complaint is that it was way too short. This particular module needed a semester for itself.

I get the sense that there is so much more to learn here and I don't feel as if I am where I should be in terms of instructing other professionals in the usage. So much I would need to do on my own and I am sure so much more technology to explore. Nevertheless, I am happy for the exposure and the ideas it triggered. Happy too am I too have learnt from my colleagues - boy we have some real smart people in our midst!

    Thanks all!

  4. I agree with you that this course needed a whole semester since we are targeting struggling readers who have used other traditional methods and were unsuccessful.
It is a packed course with so little time to practice what were taught. As i said previously more time should have been spent in the lab but with what they have taught me I am very thankful for it and i would definitely pursuing educational technology further.
